The traditional appointment with history returns in mid-November
A Living History, 4 p.m., Palazzo dei Vicari in Scarperia. The traditional appointment with history returns in mid-November; this year too there will be an archive-themed talk, theatrical readings by the Compagnia di Bindaccio taken from documents in Scarperia's pre-unification historical archive, an archive that will then be visited by all event participants. Free event, open to all.
Specifically, the theme of the talk by the archivist Francesco Calamai will be entitled ‘Grafema. Storia calligrafica dell'archivio di Scarperia’. ’There is a particular aspect of archive documents that one always has before one's eyes but on which one dwells little: the shape of the words. The innumerable writers of the documents that for five centuries have contributed to composing the historical archives of Scarperia did not always write in the same way; on the contrary, they followed fashions, needs, technical difficulties and different degrees of literacy. But it is those strokes of ink that form the letters that allow the news to be read and remembered over the centuries. And even if they appear different to our eyes, almost written in a different alphabet, it is possible to reconstruct how these strokes of the pen changed their appearance without ever changing their essence century after century'.
