The exhibition will be held from 13 July to 3 August at the Oratorio della Compagnia
The exhibition "La Fortezza abitata" opens in San Piero
The inauguration of the exhibition "La Fortezza Abitata" ("The inhabited fortress") will be held on Saturday 13th July at 6 pm in the premises of the Oratorio della Compagnia of S. Piero a Sieve. The title follows that of the project of the same name, in which the Proloco is the leader of a network of public and private subjects.
The programme - in continuity with a previous event in 2020 - envisages a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the Fortress of San Martino, a monument of great historical-architectural value commissioned by Cosimo I dei Medici, whose work was started in 1569, to be completed in 1608, during the reign of Ferdinand I. Due to its size, it is one of the largest out-of-town fortresses in Europe, a sort of fortified hill overlooking the town and the entire valley. Equipped for defensive purposes, it was dismantled by Grand Duke Leopold I in 1784, only to return for a brief period to fulfil its original purpose. Subsequently, even during the last century, the fortification housed families who cultivated farms there, and played an important role in welcoming the displaced population of Sanpiero during the bombardments of World War II.
Opening hours, until Saturday 3 August, will be as follows: Thursday to Saturday 17/19, Sunday 10/13 with free admission.
