Virtual Museum Andrea Del Castagno

cenacolo di santapollonia

On May the 2nd, 2004, a Museum entirely dedicated to the famous painter Andrea del Castagno was inaugurated by the Visit Center in Castagno d'Andrea, close to the Falterona mountain Park. The aim of the Virtual Museum, settled at the entrance of the Natural Park, is to introduce to the visitors both the Artist and the Natural Environment, which played a key role in the artist childhood.Evenif the Artist achieved his success far from his hometown, the rough beauty of this monutains had played a key role and influenced his artistic style.

Copies of his famous masterpieces realized in Florence, the city where he moved in 1440, are displayed to lead the viewer through these places of memory.
The path starts with a reproduction of the Lamentation on Christ, a model for the stained glass for the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence. Many images follow, leading the viewer into the real space. The reproductions of his most important masterpieces, the Passion and The Last Supper (realized for the Cenacolo in Santa Apollonia), are displayed on the second floor, with images related to the series of the Famous Men for Villa Carducci in Legnaia; Saint Julian, the Holy Trinity and Saint Jerome.
Each panel displays pictures of the buildings and the places where the masterpieces are located.
This specific Museum was born due to the fact that no masterpieces by Andrea del Castagno are still there, and the local institutions aimed to highlight the link between the artist and his bithplace.
