Abbazia di Moscheta - Firenzuola

Abbazia di MoschetaAmong the Italian mountain regions, the Tosco-Emilano Romagnolo Apennines have been the centre of a phenomenon fact of population in relation to the numerous roads and passes that assumed - and assured - the connection between the North and Centre of Italy.
The flow of people and things on the Apennine roads has been the cause and result of the beginning of diffused activities and works as well as a varicoloured form of population and settlements.
Along the Mediaeval roads, hospices, hospitals, and taverns were built and villages and markets were formed: post and custom services were born along the Regional and carriage roads, towns and villages that offer hospitality and welcome travellers grew up, the motorway entry and exit points and railway stations started several forms of settlement.
This radiation has interested areas not directly crossed by the Apennines and hamlets and single houses in the valleys and also at a higher level were formed.
Groups of scattered houses form a "figure" of how to use the Apennine Mountain centred on the agricultural-wooded economy to which we could associate the presence of stock-raising.
The Museum of The Historical Landscape of the Apennines is put up to show the traces and ways according to which the relation between the natural environment and human actions appeared through history times.
The museum is purposely put on show on the premises of the historic Abbey of St. Peter at Moscheta, a well-known protagonist in the picture of the Apennine landscape.

The museum itinerary

The itinerary is organized in a way to consent a progressive reading of the peculiar characters of the Apennine landscape in Mugello; a particular space is reserved for known perceptive experiences of the natural world as a whole (geology, fauna, flora).
The Museum tour starts with the story of the foundation of the Abbey of St. Peter in Moscheta and the effects which the works of the monks from Vallombrosa had on the woody and settlement organization (section 1 Moscheta, a thousand year-old Abbey).
To make the environmental characteristics of the Apennine precise a series of tests which lead the visitor to fulfil according to a route which he passes through the perception of the physical qualities of the antropic environment (section 2, the Perceived Landscape).
The suitable elements to define the peculiarity of the landscape are seen through a temporal itinerary which selects once at a time "the signs" left in the environment by the works of man, the temporal tour is carried out through five "scenes" corresponding to similar historical eras which are significant in the sense of modifying the use and design of the territory.
Leaving from the hypothetical year 1000 (scene 1. The Landscape of the forest and the Castles) we pass to the moment of the agricultural conquest of the territory (scene 2. "New Lands",farms and wood) and arrive to the time of the big change in the settlements web of the natural landscape (scene 3. The story of the Apennine scenery: roads, villages, the countryside between the 18th and 19th century).
The most recent human works are concentrated on the diffusion of the agricultural organization (scene 4. The Landscape of the farmhouses between the 19th and 20th century) and lastly the progressive desertion of the mountain, before and its most recent reconsidering of its cultural values (scene 5. From the deserted to the inhabited mountain).
